Animals As Spiritual Teachers

If you have a pet, you will have experienced first hand, how much love and joy your pet brings into your life.

But you might not have thought of your pet as a teacher. However, if you look closer, then you will discover that your pet, besides love and joy, has much wisdom to share with you.

Pets as teachers

Some of the things our pets can teach us:

  • unconditional love
  • joy; remembering to take time to play
  • being 100% present in whatever you do
  • finding a balance between rest and activity
  • and much more…

Spiritual wisdom from a pet

And if we pay attention and listen carefully, then through and from our pets we can receive many spiritual insights and words of wisdom. We can for instance use animal communication or shamanic journeying to get access to those spiritual teachings. A real life example of how this communication may occur is a conversation I had with one of my cats, Minnie:

A Conversation with Minnie

There are several ways you can prepare to make a spiritual connection with a pet (whether alive or deceased). In this case, I found myself removing a dark, heavy coat – representing my ego, worries, doubts, whatever was blocking me from becoming a “hollow bone” and receiving clearly any messages one of my pets might have.

One of my spirit helpers hands me a cape or coat of sparkling light that I put on, and a wreath of wildflowers that I put on my head. Bees are buzzing around the flowers, and the sun is shining. My spirit helper smiles and nods approvingly. A unicorn appears, greeting me.

[At that moment  – in ordinary reality – a dragonfly comes by the window. That’s unique, because at the time I am doing this, I am in the middle of city, in a second floor office in a former apartment building (no wild nature there).]

I mentally send out the invitation to any of my cats to come join me if they have any messages.

Soon after I get an image of Minnie standing beside me on my right:

“Can I have one too?”, she says and looks at the wreath of wildflowers on my head. My spirit helper brings her one and puts it on her head. She straightens up and wears it proudly while looking at me with joy in her eyes. “What about the light coat?”, she asks, smiling. He (my spirit helper) brings a light coat and puts it on her, like a blanket of stars. As she sits up, her body almost disappears or becomes light, and all I see of her is the wreath of wildflowers on her head and her face beaming with joy. I notice that it’s hard to look directly at her for long because of the intensity of the light and the joy.

“Let the light and joy in me connect you with the light and joy within yourself”, she says. “It’s actually quite simple. Deep gratitude combined with joy makes you shine. Your soul reveals its true essence – timeless bliss.”

Then she becomes more the kitty I know, smiles to me and says: “I guess there’s more to me than you expected. You’ll get peace when you let your soul shine through with gratitude and joy. Gratitude and joy is the portal to peace and eternal bliss. Look at me to connect with and get reminded of gratitude and joy.

I’ll see you at home later.”

I thank her and end the conversation. Not just the words, but in this case especially the image and the feelings from that conversation are quite powerful and have stayed with me.

And on to you…

Practice connecting with your pet from a place of inner stillness, and try to look behind or underneath the surface. Have you ever experienced looking into your pets eyes, sensing a deep love and wisdom?

  1. I had a German Shepherd called Shadow. Since five weeks of age Shadow followed me wherever I went and that is how he got his name. If ever he needed to go out at night he would gently nudge me and if I did not respond Shadow would pull my hair.
A few weeks before he passed over Shadow changed this and instead of waking me up, he would go into my daughter`s room and switch on her touch lamp. I was hurt at this as I could not understand why after all these years he would not come to me as was the usual way.
Three nights after Shadow had passed over I sat up in bed after being in a deep sleep. I could feel Shadow`s presence in the room. Suddenly my daughter came rushing in telling me that her touch lamp kept switching on by itself. In that moment I understood Shadow`s strange change of behaviour just before he died. It was his way of letting me know that he is ok.
I hope that this may help someone cope with the loss of a dear pet.

    • What an amazing and beautiful story! Thank you for sharing. I’m sure it will bring comfort and inspiration to many who are grieving the loss of a beloved pet.

That is such a moving story that tears welled up in my eyes. Shadow is and always was an angel.
