Usually, when we think of communicating or connecting with our pet, we automatically think in terms of talking to them or doing something with them. But one of my cats, Little Tut, taught me how to be together with him. Just being together with someone is not something most of us are used to. We’re usually too caught up in our own thoughts. Here’s what happened:
It was a very stormy night, and Little Tut had been out all night (he loves spending time outdoors). He finally came in about 4 in the morning and laid down next to me, while I was doing yoga. I decided to try to connect with him on a spirit or non-verbal level, internally greeting him.
Right away I experienced us sitting together on a beach, looking out over the water, watching the sunset.
No words were said, we were just quietly, peacefully sitting together during the night. I remember thinking it was an unusual experience to have with him, because he is usually very active and playful (It seems he has another side I was not completely aware of).
The sun began to rise, and as the sunlight hit us, Little Tut stretched out in the sand in front of me, rolling around, just enjoying being in the sun.
After that, we ‘zoomed’ back in the room in ordinary reality again, but before we were all the way back, I got a glimpse of sand he had dragged with him and a little wild rose flower he had put on the floor beside me. I looked at him, and he smiled with his eyes.
Experiences similar to this are common in shamanic journeys. And besides any words or messages you might get in a journey from your pet (whether deceased or alive), there will often be powerful images like this beach experience, which will stay with you and bring spirit, love and a sense of magic into your life. They will give you a deeper understanding and connection with your pet.
What you can do
Practice being with your pet without needing to talk or do anything. Gently hold your attention on your pet while being relaxed and open. As you try this, thoughts may interfere from time to time. When they do and you notice, just return to your focus – silently being present with your pet.
