Connecting with a missing pet

When a beloved pet is missing, besides desperately wanting our companion back, we have an even deeper desire (even if we do not realize it) to connect with them wherever they are, whether in this life or beyond. There are many ways you can connect with your pet in spirit and thus regain some peace of mind.

When my beloved cat Freedom went missing for 5 days, the only place I could connect with him was in my heart. At the time I didn’t know whether he was dead or alive.

Below is an excerpt of my connection with Freedom in my heart.

“When I think of Freedom and try to connect with him, I can only do so in my heart.

I experience my heart space as a garden. It looks like my real-life garden. I go to the chair that Freedom often lies on and I put a towel on the chair to make it comfortable for him. The chair is placed in a protected place in front of some bushes in the sun. And then – just as he usually does in ‘real life’, Freedom comes running and jumps up on the chair. He is happy.

I bend down, my face close to his, and tell him how much I love him. He rests his head against mine; so much gentle love.

We sit together quietly in peace for a while here in my heart – one place I know he is safe. It is a sanctuary and a healing place for him and a wonderful place for us to connect.”

Experiencing that connection with Freedom in my heart allowed me to let go of the worry and fear I had and to regain some peace of mind. I knew that whether he was alive or not, I now had a way and a place to connect with him.

Exercise for connecting with a missing pet

The technique I used to connect with him is quite simple, and if you wish to connect with your missing animal companion, you can try it too.

  1. Use a meditation or some relaxing music to get calm and focused.
  2. Set the intention to connect with your missing pet.
  3. Then focus on you heart center in the middle of your chest. Go into that heart space and see it filled with light.  Notice what your heart space looks and feels like; maybe you experience a sacred garden, a landscape, or perhaps healing light.

You can either use the image that comes up or, if no particular image comes up, imagine your pet’s favorite place. Imagine being in a place that your pet loves and where you usually connect with your pet in real life. Feel yourself being in that space, peacefully waiting. Try not to feel desperate or too eager – just allow yourself to rest in peaceful confidence, sending out a loving thought to your pet – “I’m here”. Imagine your pet approaching and greeting you lovingly. Spend some time feeling the togetherness, and if it feels right, ask your pet a question and see if an answer comes to you.

This exercise doesn’t need to be complicated or elaborate – even just making a connection, getting a feeling of or a glimpse of your pet can have a deep impact.

And even if you did not feel you made a connection with your pet, don’t worry; just sending out your loving intention from a place of peace can make a very big difference both for you and for your pet.

  1. You article series is very well written. I think the same meditation technique can be used to connect with people as well as with pets. Thank you for connecting the diamonds.
