A question many pet owners ask after pet loss is how soon they should get another pet?
The answer is individual and varies from person to person, but generally it is not a good idea to get a new pet right after the death of a pet.
There are several reasons for that, such as:
- You need time to grieve and time to reflect on the life you shared with your now deceased pet. Time to to reflect on all the fond moments you had together, and time to say your goodbyes. For your own as well as for you deceased pet’s sake.
- It is also not fair to the new pet, if you are still grieving and not able to be there fully for him or her. Integrating a new pet in the household takes time, effort, and your presence.
But that said, life sometimes has plans of its own and sends a new pet your way shortly after you have lost a pet.
For instance, a starving, homeless cat suddenly shows up on your doorstep, and you have to take care of him or her – and you might feel that you were meant to be together.
Or a friend calls you up and says that they have a puppy who desperately needs a home.
My main suggestion would be not to actively go out searching for a new pet right away and take the time you need to grieve, but to stay open and evaluate the situation, if a new pet comes your way. You might even feel that it is your deceased pet sending you a companion.
