Losing a beloved animal companion is heartbreaking, and it is normal to feel a reluctance to say goodbye. The last thing we want to do is to let go of our trusted friend.
But as hard as it is, saying goodbye can actually help you cope with and heal after your loss, and it can make your pet’s transition easier and more peaceful.
Saying goodbye is just as important before as after the loss of your pet.
When your pet is dying
If your beloved companion is dying, then saying goodbye is also giving your pet permission to die. When it is clearly your pet’s time to go, saying goodbye is a gift you give as you allow your pet to continue on their soul’s journey. It is also an opportunity for you to express your deep love and gratitude for all the fond moments you had together and for everything your pet means to you.
Saying goodbye when your pet is dying can help you with acceptance and bring at least some peace of mind.
After the loss of a pet
Many times we are not so fortunate that we can be there in person and say goodbye to our pet when they die. If your pet dies suddenly or you are not with them when they die, you will have to say your goodbyes after the death of your pet.
Creating a little ceremony where you say your goodbyes and express what you need to say to your pet, is an important step in your healing process.
If you avoid saying goodbye to your companion, you may make it more difficult for yourself to accept your pet’s death, and could suffer long-lasting pain and depression.
Remember the love
You will miss your pet’s physical presence, but as you move consciously through your grieving process in your own pace and in your own way, you can reconnect with your beloved pet through the love you shared.
Look inside your heart; underneath the pain you will find that the love and the connection you had with your pet is still alive.
The grief and the love go hand in hand, so as you allow the grief, you will also allow the love.
