When we lose an animal companion, it is not just we humans who are grieving the loss of our animal friend. If you have other pets in the household and they had a close relationship with the deceased pet, then they might be grieving too.
I experienced that when my cat Pittiput died. Freedom, his best friend, had a hard time coping. We provided healing, special attention, and support, and it helped him a lot.
But then, when the anniversary of Pittiput’s death was approaching, Freedom started behaving oddly. He started pacing around, meowing. There was nothing wrong with him physically, and we did give him extra attention and care. That helped a little. At this point we hadn’t realized that it was the 1-year anniversary of Pittiput’s death, but then it suddenly occurred to me.
I then connected with my spirit helpers through a shamanic journey, asking for help for Freedom. In this journey Freedom’s best friend Pittiput shows up. He lies close to Freedom, comforting him, telling him that he is only a meow away.
The next day Freedom is more more peaceful and he doesn’t pace and meow. He spends a lot of the time outside in the garden, so when there’s peace and the other cats are sleeping in the house, I go outside, sit on a chair in our little greenhouse while the rain is drizzling outside. I look at the blue iris and the peony which are both blooming for the first time. A feeling of peace.
Freedom is not much of a lap cat; he usually stays on the ground close to where we are, but on this day, he came over, jumped up on my lap, and went straight to sleep. That was a pretty big difference from the restless, meowing kitty he was the day before.
I’m eternally grateful to Pittiput for always being there for Freedom and for us.
